Thrive Tribe: Building lasting behaviour change skills across a public health workforce

A partnership since 2018, spanning training, supervision and workforce development

Thrive Tribe delivers public health programmes across the UK. From weight management and smoking cessation to physical activity, mental wellbeing and diabetes prevention.

Thrive Tribe needed an evidence-based approach robust enough to bring consistency to their work, yet flexible enough to flex across very different services and populations. They wanted more than training. They wanted these skills to become embedded in the culture of the organisation itself.

The Approach

NCBC has partnered with Thrive Tribe since 2018 to meet exactly this challenge. What started as a structured training programme has grown into a long-term, evolving partnership built around workforce development and continuous improvement.

Over the years, that's included:

  • Understanding Behaviour Change — Level 1 & Level 2

  • Group Facilitation Skills Training

  • Suicide Risk Awareness Training

  • Making Every Contact Count (MECC) — Train the Trainer

  • Bespoke coaching and workshops for teams

  • Peer Facilitation Supervision for Facilitator Leads

  • Consultancy and support with training programme development

Training runs monthly, backed by ongoing supervision that helps Facilitator Leads embed their learning, build best practice, and grow as facilitators in their own right. NCBC has worked closely, throughout with Thrive Tribe's quality, clinical governance and workforce development teams, keeping the work grounded in operational reality and the day-to-day pressures of frontline delivery.

The Impact

Participant feedback has been consistently outstanding across the partnership, a reflection of both the quality of the training and how directly it applies to practice.

"It was one of the best courses I have been on for content and learning, with practical tools to help us all going forward."
Understanding Behaviour Change Level 2, Feb 2025

"[The trainer] made complex topics feel accessible and created an inclusive environment where everyone felt comfortable contributing."
Understanding Behaviour Change Level 1, May 2025

"It gave me a different perspective and a new way of thinking about behaviour change."
Understanding Behaviour Change Level 2, April 2025

"The course was simply incredible. I can't find the words to thank you for giving me so much confidence."
Group Facilitation Skills, June 2024

This work has evolved with Thrive Tribe's changing needs and priorities. It's a clear example of what's possible when workforce development is treated as an ongoing process.
