Advancing Health Coaching Programme with UCLH

Over five years, NCBC partnered with University College London Hospitals to develop and standardise advanced health coaching practice across clinical settings.

The programme was designed for practitioners who already had a foundation in behaviour change but needed to deepen their applied skills in real clinical conversations: greater consistency, confidence in complex interactions, and sustained use of person-centred techniques.

NCBC developed a comprehensive three-day programme combining training, assessment, and supervision. All grounded in behavioural science and neuroscience, sessions covered key competencies including the role of language in health conversations, assessing readiness to change, and working effectively with ambivalence. The programme was deliberately experiential, using case studies, skills practice, and live demonstrations to build confidence in real-world scenarios.

Training days were spaced over several weeks to allow time for practice and reflection between sessions, supported by a post-course handbook and two follow-up supervision sessions to embed learning in day-to-day clinical work.

Evaluation data from 2019–2025 consistently shows the programme met its objectives with measurable improvements in health coaching capability maintained beyond completion and translated into everyday clinical interactions across multiple cohorts.
